Software engineering is a diverse field that touches nearly every aspect of modern life. From cellphones to personal computers to video game systems, virtually every piece of everyday technology relies on specialized skills in order to function properly. Below is a brief look at some of the career opportunities for software engineering students .

    Software Developer

From creating phone apps to coding specific programs, software engineers are tasked with either creating a product from scratch or modifying existing software. However, software engineers aren’t limited to just coding; they may work at any stage of the development cycle and use their background to work as a software architect or project manager. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for software developers is projected to grow by 22% from 2012 to 2022—much faster than the average for all occupations.

    Embedded Software Engineer

Even everyday items that most people take for granted require software to run properly. Embedded software engineers specialize in programming code for items as diverse as vending machines, automated tellers, USB devices, medical equipment, and even defense technology. Embedded software engineers must familiarize themselves with platform-specific characteristics to create a reliable product.

    Cyber Security Specialist

Software engineers are in extremely high demand in the cyber security sector; the BLS projects employment in the field to grow by 37% from 2012 to 2022.  Much of software development is about making programs as user-friendly and accessible as possible, but security software engineers make sure that information stays as secure by developing security protocols, installing and updating protective software, and looking for vulnerabilities in security. The cyber security field applies to various industries, including computer companies, commercial enterprises, and financial businesses.

This is just a brief look at some of the career opportunities available to students of Seattle University’s College of Computer Science & Engineering . SU was the first educational institution to develop a Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program in 1979, and we continue to provide students with the technical skills and educational resources to realize their professional goals. Seattle University has been a pioneer and a leader in computer science education for decades, even awarding the world’s first Master of Software Engineering degree in 1982. The Master of Science Computer Science (MSCS) program is designed to cater to the needs of the working professional and develop hands-on experience in advanced computer science and software engineering. A full-time student at Seattle University can complete the program in five quarters. However, admission to the MSCS program is very competitive and there are special requirements for admission in addition to the application. To learn more, read on.

    Education Requirements

The MSCS program requires a four-year equivalent bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related degree from a regionally accredited institution. You should be aware that many career schools and technology programs that offer distance learning typically have national accreditation , which is not eligible for transfer into the MSCS program. Conditional admission is available with prerequisite courses. In addition, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 calculated from official transcripts of all post-secondary educational institutions in the last 90 quarter/60 semester credits of your bachelor’s degree, including any post-baccalaureate work.

    Professional Requirements

Potential students must also submit a 1-2 page letter of intent and current résumé reflecting at least two years’ work experience in the software industry. Two professional recommendations (forms included with the application) are also necessary. GRE results from the past five years and official transcripts are also necessary.

Here at the Seattle University College of Computer Science & Engineering, we pride ourselves on providing real-world experience in a constantly evolving field.
