The Seattle area has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years; the first Europeans arrived in the late 1700s, and land was first claimed by Luther Collins in 1851. Seattle was first incorporated in 1865, then disincorporated in 1867 and reincorporated in 1869.

Seattle’s current population is estimated at 662,400, making it the largest city in Washington state and the Pacific Northwest. Some of the city’s largest claims to fame are its successful football team, the Seahawks, and its notability as a major jazz scene in the early to mid-20th century.
